Hello guys welcome back! I hope you are safe and healthy in this difficult and challenging time. Today we are discussing about "Why Sugar is Bad for You" and "Is Sugar really an Evil in our Diet".

From Diet coke to Peanut butter, Sugar can be found in most unexpected products.

In our Everyday life, We all consume processed foods and packed drinks, soda cans, packed fruit juices, energy drinks etc. They all contains added sugar.

Dieticians and Doctors suggests that we should reduce our daily calories from sugar to less than 9% per day.

Consuming sugar led to obesity and other chronic diseases such as heart problems, type-2 diabetes.

Here are 5 reasons why sugar is bad for your health.

1. Weight Gain

Obesity is the major health problem in all over the world and one of the main reason behind obesity is sugar sweetened beverages.

All the Sugary drinks like soda cans, energy drinks, packed juices contains fructose which is a type of simple sugar.

Consuming Fructose increases our hunger and desire for more food. If we consume excessive amount of fructose then our body attain resistance from a hormone called leptin. It is the hormone that control hunger and tells our body when to stop eating.

So, In simple words all these drinks don't kill our hunger and we are consuming just high amount of calories that makes us bulky like a buffalo.

There is one more thing which is related to sugary drinks that is visceral fat. Sugary drinks increases the amount of visceral fat that led to health problems like diabetes and heart problems.

2. Risk of Heart Diseases

Every year thousands of people dies due to heart problems like stroke, heart attack. Eating too much sugar in our diet, drinking soda cans are is one of the main culprit behind these problems.

High-sugar in our diet can cause many health problems such as obesity, inflammation, High blood pressure level and high tri-glyceride. High tri-glyceride level means thickening of arteries walls that led to stroke and heart attack.

Atherosclerosis is directly linked with sugar. Consuming too much sugar can cause atherosclerosis which is a disease when fats, cholesterol build up in the arteries, causing obstruction to blood flow and led to rupture of arteries causing internal bleeding which will led to death.

A study shows that people who consumes sugary diets 40% more prone to heart diseases as compare to those people who consumes less sugary diet.

So limiting your sugar intake will reduce your risk of getting a heart attack or a stroke.

3. Causes Acne

Sugary foods and drinks are high in GI value(Glycemic index) and high GI means high amount of carbs and sugar.

Our body continuously digest and absorb carbs(mainly refined carbs) and sugar. Due to this continuous absorption body's blood sugar level increases(mainly glucose).

High level of glucose in blood results in triggering a hormone which is called insulin. To lower the high levels of glucose, high amount of insulin is produced which also triggers some other hormones as well like growth hormone.

Growth hormone increases the production of sebum, androgen and increases the inflammation in body. when our body produces more sebum more than ever then our skin gets oily and bacteria that are present on our skin along with dust particles and sebum give rise to  pimples or acne.

It is advisable to prevent high GI foods, refined carbs and sugar if you have acne or pimples.

some High GI foods are as follows:

  • Breads and pastas
  • Soda
  • Canned drinks
  • Desserts and candy
  • Sugar
  • Rice

4. Accelerate Skin Aging Process

Elastin and collagen are two proteins that are building blocks of skin. Healthy levels of both elastin and collagen makes your skin youthful and stronger.

Glycation is a process in which sugar when enters in blood stream, it binds to proteins. when the level of sugar increases in blood, it results in triggering the glycation process. More sugar in blood means more glucose link with proteins(elastin and collagen). During Glycation, Harmful compounds are produced which is Advanced Glycation End Products or AGEs.

AGEs damages elastin and collagen that are responsible for skin youthful appearance. When elastin and collagen becomes damaged skin looses it's softness and becomes loose and saggy.

It is recommended that eating a low-carb diet and limiting sugar intake will help in better skin appearance and makes it soft and strong

5. Risk of Type-2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when level of sugar in blood remains high for a long time.

Diabetes is very common nowadays that every 6-7 out of 10 people is suffering from diabetes. Undoubtedly there is a direct relation between diabetes and excessive sugar consumption.

Obesity is considered as the strongest and main reason for type-2 diabetes.

When we consumes sugar it mixes with blood and increases the amount of glucose in blood. To maintain glucose in blood there is a gland in our body called pancreas which secretes a hormone insulin.

Excessive sugar consumption drives resistance to insulin which means pancreas doesn't secrete enough insulin to maintain glucose level in blood results in diabetes.

So its better to not to consume excessive sugar in form of candy, desserts, refined carbs, packed fruit juices, carbonated drinks etc.

Diabetes is a very serious disease because it cause heart attack, stroke, heart failure, coma and kidney failure. So, its better to prevent it by controlling our blood sugar.
